Stocks taking a hit again this month. Will probably move some more cash into brokerage and continue to go bargain hunting for stocks.

Also starting to think seriously about getting into some more residential rental properties. Have asked my broker to start looking for multi-units in the Albany area.

Company A had a normal month, approx the same as last year. Took a 45k distribution.

Company B is progressing on bringing its products to market. At this point probably end of 2nd Qtr, maybe into 3rd Qtr.

Keeping cash position high to take advantage of any good buying opps.

I am a partner in 2 media related companies. I will call them Company A and Company B.

Company A was started in 2005 when I merged a company that I owned 100% of, with its biggest local competitor. I own 33% of Company A. It turned cash flow positive at the beginning of 2006 and has been profitable for the last two years.

Company B was founded about 4 years ago. Total capitalization to date is $106,000, of which I contributed $42,500. I own a 40% stake in Company B, which is working on developing products which are only just now coming to market. It is not profitable at this point.

Valuing small, closely held privately owned companies is difficult. To date I have not included any capital value for either company other than the actual capital that I have contributed. Company B is not profitable at this point and I will continue to value it only as the actual capital contributed. Company A, on the other hand, has now had two full years of positive earnings and beginning with Jan 08 I will be including a capital value of Company A calculated at what I consider to be a conservative 4 times the trailing 12 months earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT). I am subtracting depreciation and amortization from earnings, as in my opinion those are real expenses needed for the ongoing operation of the business. I will probably update this on a quarterly basis.

Company A showed 2007 earnings of $2,144,000 before interest and taxes. On a multiple of 4 that is a capital value for the company of $8,576,000. Based on that my 33.3% stake is valued at $2,855,808.

Although this could be included in the "stocks" category, I am going to keep it in "other" for now and use "stocks" to track publicly traded equities.

December was a big month. Got an end of year 300k distribution from Company A. 44k went into the self directed 401k and another 50k went into the Scott Trade brokerage account.

"Other" debts came down because I paid off about $150,000 in personal loans I had taken in order to purchase the company I used to work at back in 2005. That company was merged with another one to form Company A. I also cleared out $33,900 in accrued tax liability when I paid my 2007 estimated taxes.
