I am married with one son. As of January 2017, I have worked as an exploration geologist in the oil industry for ~34 years, with ~20 of those years with one Supermajor oil company, ~4 years with a moderate-sized oil company, ~4 years with a small start-up oil company, and beginning in late 2010, ~6 years as a semi-retired part-time independent consultant working mainly remotely out of my home office.
Best Financial Decision:
In 2006, I took a risk and left a comfortable 20 year career at a Supermajor oil company and joined start-up oil company which discovered oil and IPO'd ~4 years later in late 2010.
Current Financial Strategy:
I have a balanced portfolio with ~55% in equities, mainly in S&P 500 and international large cap index funds, along with high div yield individual stocks. ~20% of my portfolio is in mainly short term muni bond funds, and ~25% is in cash and money markets, awaiting the next correction / Bear Market. If and when interest rates finish rising to sufficient levels, hopefully over the next few years, I will probably re-allocate my short-term bond fund and high div yielding stock positions to longer-term individual bonds and CD's, reducing my risk as I get older.
